Adopt-A-Trail Program

Update: ADOPT A TRAIL MEETING -TBD

*The Adopt-A-Trail program is supported by a dedicated and wonderful group of people who volunteer to maintain sections of the Waterloo trail system. Typical maintenance tasks include trimming low branches, picking up litter, removing fallen trees, fixing sign posts, etc. While you are enjoying the trails from the back of your favorite mount, remember that the trails are kept open, safe and clean by the sweat and sore muscles of the WHA Members. The Adopt-A-Trail volunteers go above and beyond and for that, you should thank every one of them.

**There are still several areas of the trail system that have not been adopted. If you are interested in helping maintain a section of the trail, Please contact a board member.

**WHA Trail Map - We are trying to somewhat label the trails. With a diverse group of equine enthusiasts, some may prefer more challenging or not so challenging rides. If you would like to submit your opinion of the trail and your riding experience, it would better help us to determine this. *Please make sure to include your level of equine experience.

Easy- A wide trail, often short in length and free of obstacles, will likely be located near day use areas, horse camp facilities and recreation areas where heavy use is expected.

Moderate- A wide, longer trail of moderate grade, traversing varying topography and free of most obstacles.

Moderately Rugged- For the more experienced horse and rider. Trail width may vary. Steeper grades, varying topography and changes in trail surface will be encountered

Rugged- Rugged trails are designed for single file riding over extremely steep grades, dramatic topography, native rock, and frequently changing trail surfaces. Obstacles such as rock ledges, fallen tress and creek crossing may be encountered.

Update:  "Trail Evaluation Ride" April 27, 2008- We will spend this wonderful day riding and evaluating the trails. First ride starts at 10:00am, second ride will begin at 2:00pm.

"Spring Round Up" Work Bee- May 10, 2008 Starting at 8:00am, Lunch at 12:00.

Fall Work Bee- August 16, 2008

We usually hold two work bees per year. Our first work bee is held on a Saturday sometime in May, before Memorial Weekend. Projects are determined at board meetings earlier in the year. A postcard is sent out to members letting them know when it will be and what tools are needed for the jobs. Any and all help is appreciated. We usually have jobs that require tractors, as well as other jobs that only require hand tools. Work bees start at 9:00 am and usually wrap up around 1:00 pm. Lunch is provided by WHA. The Work Bees are a great way to meet other trail riders and help maintain the campground and trails. You receive one night (Friday or Saturday) of free camping to be used only on the weekend of the work bee.

Michigan Horse Council Stallion Expo

Thank you to all who volunteered their time and efforts! See you all next year!

WHA, along with other trail clubs, has a table in the Trails Room at the Michigan Horse Expo. If you would like to see all the newest horse related products, sign up to man the WHA trail booth for two hours and your admittance to the Expo is free. You will find clothing, tack, seminars, home decorations, trailers, and of course lots of horses, all under one roof. There is a high school rodeo on Friday night that is always exciting and fun to watch. We are looking for volunteers to help promote our campground and trails at Waterloo Recreation Area. If you are interested in helping to staff the booth, contact a board member.
